Sclerotherapy is the minimally invasive removal of varicose veins by the injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. This underlying pathology of varicose veins can be painful and thankfully, sclerotherapy can relieve the discomfort that accompanies that underlying condition.
Sclerotherapy is overall safe and does not require significant recovery time. Few people may have mild side effects such as inflammation or a minimal allergic reaction but most patients can get up and leave right after their procedure is over.
